Education is continuously growing, developing, changing, so many people undertake courses to begin again the education they never completed or to keep abreast with these new developments. With the development of technology, education has become more accessible for people with disabilities leading to people completing higher levels of education which in turn can lead to more complex and skilled work. For many people with disabilities from both indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds, education can go a long way to not only developing their skills but also their self esteem and the pride of their family, friends and community. For many, a small financial grant will enable them to undertake a course. This education fund is about helping people complete or undertake courses and programs through providing small grants. Our fund is looking to distribute small six monthly grants of up to $2,500 to assist people with disabilities to continue their learning. In April, the NIYLA team will be travelling around Australia, hosting day forums for Indigenous young people. They are looking to engage 50 Indigenous young people in Years 10, 11 and 12 in each of the full day leadership forums in Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin and Brisbane during National Youth Week. The interactive and engaging forums will focus on 'what makes a leader.' Students will explore this concept through a wide range of fun, reflective and practical activities structured around individual and collective identity, personal development, creating an aspirational vision and making change happen. They are shaping up to be fantastic days! APPLICATIONS OPEN Click Here Source: AYAC enews 28/2/13 National Children’s and Youth Law Centre (NCYLC) has an exciting new project called 'Caps, Apps and other Mobile Traps' that seeks to empower young people in making informed decisions when it comes to mobile phone ownership and the financial responsibility that comes with it.
The project will see the production of materials for young people so that you can better understand your consumer rights when: - choosing a mobile phone plan; - reading and signing the contract; - receiving their first bill; and - needing to make a complaint when their rights as a consumer have been breached. To help NCYLC with this new campaign we ask young people to please fill out this survey to spill your thoughts about the issues you are facing in relation to mobile phone ownership and your struggle to understand adult-based telecommunications jargon in making informed decisions. If you are under 18 please click here for the survey. The topic also receives attention in the Commission’s February 2013 Discussion Paper which notes that the Commission has “heard evidence relating to the establishment of a therapeutic secure care model of placement, or a ‘containment model’”. PeakCare is pleased to have produced the attached Discussion Paper entitled Secure Care – Needed or Not? to prompt further exploration and consideration by our member agencies and supporters about issues concerning secure care. You can also link to the Discussion Paper from our website. We would be pleased to receive your comments and feedback by close of business, Thursday, 21st March 2013. This should be sent to our Office Manager, Gary Roberts at [email protected]. Source: Peakcare email 14/3/13
Brisbane Youth Service’s Live to Learn program is up and running again for 2013 at our new MacLauchlan St location. Live to Learn provides literacy and numeracy support at all ability levels for young people aged 12 – 24. Live to Learn is an initiative of Brisbane Youth Service as part of the Brisbane North and West Youth Connections Consortium. “Live to Learn” is held at Brisbane Youth Service every Thursday from 10am – 12pm. One on one sessions are also available by appointment with our tutor. Referrals can be made simply by phoning Brisbane Youth Service and speaking to our tutor, Harriet. Live to Learn is a learning opportunity for young people who may not be engaged in education, or those looking to re-engage in education who would like an opportunity to improve their skills before stepping back in the ring. Live to Learn is also an opportunity for course-work/school-work support for those young people who are currently in education, but may need some extra support.
Learning Choices programs offer vital pathways to enable young people to remain in school or to return to complete their education in inclusive, innovative and flexible settings. Dusseldorp Skills Forum is pleased to launch its expanded and enhanced Learning Choices website, based on a project led by A/Prof Kitty te Riele (from The Victoria Institute at Victoria University Melbourne, and with major support from the Ian Potter Foundation). The new website lists over 800 programs nationwide. Features:
The information provided on the website is aimed both at young people (and their parents, youth workers and teachers) to help them find a program that suits them - and at programs, so that they can learn about and from each other. Although there is much variety, what the programs listed here have in common is that:
If you run a program that is similar, but not listed, please add your program to ensure it is also included. The Eagleby Learning College has a new round of vacancies for Term 2 - commencing 15th April 2013. These courses include:
